Frp Composites Technology Brings Advantages to the American Bridge Building Industry
نویسنده
چکیده
Over the past six years of implementing the Innovative Bridge Research and Construction Program under the Transportation Equity Act, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites technology have successfully demonstrated its potential for structural applications in bridges. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has funded over 120 projects scattered throughout the United States and subject them under different environmental and service conditions. This paper will present some samples of the bridge applications using FRP composites in deck systems, bonded repairs and strengthening, and prestressed applications. Some focused discussions on bonded repairs and strengthening will be presented because there is a greater need to maintain and upgrade existing bridges. It will also focus on what the Federal Highway Administration has done and continues to do to advance these innovative materials in the near future. Development of design specifications, guidelines and materials and testing standards are in the works. The rebuilding of the Nation’s highway system and aging infrastructure presents a tremendous market opportunity for FRP composites for the 21st Century.

Commercialization of FRP reinforced glulam beam technology
Thin laminates made of high-strength pultruded fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) have been developed to reinforce gluelaminated timber (glulam) beams. The FRP reinforced glulams are significantly stiffer, stronger, and have less variation in bending strength than a conventional (unreinforced) glulam of equal size. Following the technical development and model building code approval of design proc...

This paper reports on the North American state-of-the-art in the use of FRP composites in concrete structures. FRP bars have been used as the internal reinforcement in concrete members to replace conventional steel rebars for a host of reasons. The principles for design and construction have been established and proposed to industry by the American Concrete Institute (ACI). The fundamental prin...
متن کاملA Novel Structural Assessment Technique to Prevent Damaged FRP- Wrapped Concrete Bridge Piers from Collapse
Repairing deteriorated concrete bridge piers using externally wrapped FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) composites has been proven as an effective approach. This technique has also been applied to low-rise building structures. Failures in FRP-wrapped concrete structures may occur by flexural failures of critical sections or by debonding of FRP plate from the concrete substrate. Debonding in the FR...

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites offer very high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios. As a result, the aerospace industry is making a major effort to incorporate an increasing number of composite materials into various components and structures. However, machining of FRP composites is one of the most difficult and least understood areas in manufacturing technology. Thus, ...
